However, as you try to memorise proper grammar, and try to avoid the mistakes common to most students of English, you may wonder why you are learning the language in the first place.

So, why is English important?

After Mandarin, English is spoken by more people than any other language, and is the native language of more than 350 million people. More people speak English than those who speak the Arabic and French languages combined.

Moreover, English is the international language of diplomacy, business, science, technology, banking, computing, medicine, aviation, UN & NATO armed forces, engineering, tourism, Hollywood films and arguably the best pop and rock music in the world.

English has plenty of words to choose from. In fact, an English speaker is offered the biggest vocabulary of any language with a choice of 500,000 to 1,000,000 words (including technical and scientific terms).

But don’t panic, most English speakers do very well with a vocabulary of around 20,000 words.

English can be fun too. For instance, the music of such stars as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson and Madonna has encouraged fans to speak the language of their idols, whilst others have enrolled in English classes to improve their understanding of the dialogue in films and TV shows.

Or perhaps they have embraced English to enjoy the writing of Stephen King, George Orwell or J.K. Rowling. They may even have an interest in speaking English just to converse with travellers from other countries, who communicate by using the English global interlingua while travelling abroad.

Finally, if you are studying English at school, college or university, remember that getting an ‘A’ grade in English is almost worthless, in terms of communication, if you cannot speak the language. Spoken English is used in the best careers, the best universities, and is increasingly being used at job interviews. So like it or not, English is a very important language to learn how to speak.

Being able to read and write in English is not enough!

Galleries

Student English Training

<img style="cursor:pointer; As we all know that PEC is one of extracuricullars that bult in Wachid Hasyim 2 Taman Senior High School located in Taman district. And last time, we planned to hold one of activity that held for selecting the new members named SET ( Student of English Training ). We held in twice. Of course with selection system. And they are the activities …

1st of Student of English Training

Finally, that day came true. In Sunday, we held our best planning for selecting new members for PEC. And in the UNITARA airdrome, we did what we planned before. There were 4 postes. They were Spelling Bee, General Knowledge, Indonesian Zone, and Vission and Mission.

• Speling Bee : there were 10 questions that we made. And we would read and the candidates of member might answer them.
• General Knowledge : they might answer about 10 questions that cases based from YPM, PEC, OSIS, Intertaiment, and of course Social lecturnes.
• Indonesian Zone : they would be given some questions in Indonesia language, and they answered in Indonesian too. They gave questions about why they were interested about English.
• Vission and Mission : in thei id cards, they had written thei vision and mission or reasons why they wanted to join in PEC. And for the keeper of this post would answer it on.

After these activities, they got break and held eating together events. And after that, we got back home.
( ps : we got the special guess, he is our best English teacher, Mr. Mahbub )

2nd of Student of English Training

Actually it was different with 1st Student of English Training. In this event, the candidates for new members in PEC might to get night in a school. They might to sleep there and left their own home as well. In this event, more activities we did and needed lots of energy actually. After opening ceremony, we got praying together until Isya’ has come. And then meeting to share information ( named : All About PEC ) and then, eating program.

After that slept away. And you know what? The extreme of activites we planned was Screamingful program. They ( candidates of member ) might got P E C papers in 3 different post. And in post 1 was P paper. 2 was E and 3 was C. They might find them for being a best. And you know what? They got a journey in night. Hm… and for the some of committees became the ghostes. And the best ghost was Nabilla. ( congrats! Based on polling )

At morning, they got SKJ and then eating program. So got joining with Mrs. Wiwik ( PEC advicer ) and then got the post test. There were 5 postes. They were Motto, General Knowledge, Debate, Grammatically, and the last Speech post.

• Motto : same with the past. Like vision and mission post in 1st SET
• General Knowledge : same post like 1st SET ( of course with different cases )
• Debate : like debate contest. And the theme was Private School VS State School
• Grammatically : found 2 wrong words when the post keeper read the case
• Last, Speech : read the speech text that committee prepared

And the last program was symbolist program and finally we ( as the committees ) found 20 new members that alredy joining in the PEC.

Congtaulation!!!

Ps : thx for President of OSIS ( A. fatur Rahman ), Mr. Rochal Syaifuddin, Mr. Farid Djauhari ( as the co-chairman posisioned in studenthood ), Mrs. Wiwik Tri Heni ( as our best advicer ) and the gardeners ( Mr. Burhan and Satimin )

( for documentaries, here )

ATTENTION

OPENED !!

Who wants to join in PEC extracuricullar, let’s join us with fill the form that you can get under of flag ceremonial every rest time ( morning ) and first meeting time ( noon )

So, don’t be afraid to join us

WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU IN ENGLISH WELL
( BETTER THAN EVER )

10 TIPS TO SPEAK ENGLISH WELL

As we all know that English is not our best language. We are Indonesian ( who stayes in Indonesia ) and English is one of difficult language to express it breafly. Especially for speaking. Ups…. !! wait, we have some solutions. Let’s read in them :

i. Observe the mouth movements of those who speak English well and try to imitate them.
When you are watching television, observe the mouth movements of the speakers. Repeat what they are saying, while imitating the intonation and rhythm of their speech.

ii. Until you learn the correct intonation and rhythm of English, slow your speech down.
If you speak too quickly, and with the wrong intonation and rhythm, native speakers will have a hard time understanding you.
Don't worry about your listener getting impatient with your slow speech -- it is more important that everything you say be understood.

iii. Listen to the 'music' of English.
Do not use the 'music' of your native language when you speak English. Each language has its own way of 'singing'.

iv. Use the dictionary.
Try and familiarise yourself with the phonetic symbols of your dictionary. Look up the correct pronunciation of words that are hard for you to say.

v. Make a list of frequently used words that you find difficult to pronounce and ask someone who speaks the language well to pronounce them for you.
Record these words, listen to them and practice saying them. Listen and read at the same time.

vi. Buy books on tape.
Record yourself reading some sections of the book. Compare the sound of your English with that of the person reading the book on the tape.

vii. Pronounce the ending of each word.
Pay special attention to 'S' and 'ED' endings. This will help you strengthen the mouth muscles that you use when you speak English.

viii. Read aloud in English for 15-20 minutes every day.
Research has shown it takes about three months of daily practice to develop strong mouth muscles for speaking a new language.

ix. Record your own voice and listen for pronunciation mistakes.
Many people hate to hear the sound of their voice and avoid listening to themselves speak. However, this is a very important exercise because doing it will help you become conscious of the mistakes you are making.

x. Be patient.
You can change the way you speak but it won't happen overnight. People often expect instant results and give up too soon. You can change the way you sound if you are willing to put some effort into it. As a result of the military, economic, scientific, political, and cultural influence of the British Empire during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries and of the United States since the mid 20th century. It has become the lingua franca in many parts of the world. It is used extensively as a second language and as an official language in Commonwealth countries and many international organizations.

Historically, English originated from several dialects, now collectively termed Old English, which were brought to Great Britain by Anglo-Saxon settlers beginning in the 5th century. The language was heavily influenced by the Old Norse language of Viking invaders. After the Norman conquest, Old English developed into Middle English, borrowing heavily from the Norman (Anglo-French) vocabulary and spelling conventions. Modern English developed from there notably with the Great Vowel Shift that began in 15th-century England, and continues to adopt foreign words from a variety of languages, as well as coining new words. A significant number of English words, especially technical words, have been constructed based on roots from Latin and ancient Greek.

SIGNIFICANCE

Modern English, sometimes described as the first global lingua franca, is the dominant international language in communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy. Its spread beyond the British Isles began with the growth of the British Empire, and by the late nineteenth century its reach was truly global. Following British colonization in North America, it is the dominant language in the United States, whose growing economic and cultural influence and status as a global superpower since World War II have significantly accelerated the language's adoption across the planet.

A working knowledge of English has become a requirement in a number of fields, occupations and professions such as medicine and computing; as a consequence over a billion people speak English to at least a basic level (see English language learning and teaching). It is also one of six official languages of the United Nations.

Linguists such as David Crystal recognize that one impact of this massive growth of English, in common with other global languages, has been to reduce native linguistic diversity in many parts of the world, most particularly in Australasia and North America, and its huge influence continues to play an important role in language attrition.
Similarly, historical linguists, aware of the complex and fluid dynamics of language change, are always aware of the potential English contains through the vast size and spread of the communities that use it and its natural internal variety, such as in its creoles and pidgins, to produce a new family of distinct languages over time.

HISTORY

English is a West Germanic language that originated from the Anglo-Frisian and Lower Saxon dialects brought to Britain by Germanic settlers and Roman auxiliary troops from various parts of what is now northwest Germany and the northern Netherlands[citation needed] in the 5th century. One of these Germanic tribes was the Angles, who may have come from Angeln, and Bede wrote that their whole nation came to Britain,[20] leaving their former land empty. The names 'England' (or 'Aenglaland') and English are derived from the name of this tribe.
The Anglo-Saxons began invading around 449 AD from the regions of Denmark and Jutland. Before the Anglo-Saxons arrived in England the native population spoke Brythonic, a Celtic language. Although the most significant changes in dialect occurred after the Norman invasion of 1066, the language retained its name and the pre-Norman invasion dialect is now known as Old English.

Initially, Old English was a diverse group of dialects, reflecting the varied origins of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms of Great Britain. One of these dialects, Late West Saxon, eventually came to dominate. The original Old English language was then influenced by two waves of invasion. The first was by language speakers of the North Germanic branch of the Germanic family; they conquered and colonized parts of the British Isles in the 8th and 9th centuries. The second was the Normans in the 11th century, who spoke Old Norman and developed an English variety of this called Anglo-Norman. (Over the centuries, this lost the specifically Norman element under the influence of Parisian French and, later, of English, eventually turning into a distinctive dialect of Anglo-French.) These two invasions caused English to become "mixed" to some degree (though it was never a truly mixed language in the strict linguistic sense of the word; mixed languages arise from the cohabitation of speakers of different languages, who develop a hybrid tongue for basic communication).

Cohabitation with the Scandinavians resulted in a lexical supplementation of the Anglo-Frisian core of English; the later Norman occupation led to the grafting onto that Germanic core of a more elaborate layer of words from the Romance languages. This Norman influence entered English largely through the courts and government. Thus, English developed into a "borrowing" language of great flexibility and a huge vocabulary.

With the emergence and spread of the British Empire, the English language was adopted in regions around the world, such as North America, India, Africa, and Australia. The emergence of the United States as a superpower has also helped the spread of English.

CARETAKER STUCTURAL of PEC

Chairman : M.
